Fayetteville High School’s golf team finished last season as district champs, the first district title in school history.
Though under new leadership in 2018, it’s the hope of Coach Jay McElyea that the Tigers will go back-to-back. “It’s my first year at FHS, but I’ve coached in high school golf before and played on a team in college,” Coach McElyea said. “We lost one senior off last year’s boys’ team. Jeffrie Pettie, Mac O’Connor, Drake McElyea and G.W. Davis allh ave experience from last season. “The kids have practiced hard, and now we just go out and play,” he continued. “I think the boys will compete for the district title again. “I want to thank Dan Holt and Pebble Creek Golf Course for letting us practice and host matches,” McElyea added. “It’s always in great condition and ready to go.” In the battle for the title, FHS will compete against Cornersville, Huntland, Moore County and Richland. Seniors on this year’s team are Lorin Gattis, J.R. Bagley and Jeffrie Pettie. Juniors include Drake McElyea, Garrett Gardner, Mac O’Connor and Andy Young. Three freshmen round out the team, Emma Young, Hannah Giffin and Cason Seals.
FHS opened its season with a 183-204 win over Cornersville. J.R. Bagley carded the low score of a 42. The Tigers followed up with a 190-255 win over Huntland. Jeffrie Pettie had the low score of 44.
