About the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

  • ESL services are provided to students whose first language is not English. Students are given a screener to determine if services are needed. Students will be tested in the domains of Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. Teachers will use the WIDA Standards to help students become proficient in all four domains. The WIDA Standards help a student’s English Language proficiency in communicating in social and instructional settings, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. In the Spring, all ESL students will be given the WIDA ACESS to assess students proficiency of the English language in all 4 domains. Once students are proficient in all four domains will transition out of ESL services and be monitored for 4 years.
