Why Art?

The study of art is important to us in that it engages the imagination and fosters flexible ways of thinking. All people need to see clearly, hear acutely and feel sensitively through the arts. We can not fully train the mind without training artistic intelligence. Culture is artistic refinement in which each person develops their own individuality. Art education gives students an opportunity to develop talent, skill, self confidence, expression and knowledge of our enormous artistic inheritance. It contributes to this community’s economic well being by deterring vandalism, giving us enriched ways of looking at life with an alternative for negative behavior. It brings job opportunities, increased decisions in clothing, landscaping and community projects which will increase tourist trade and make our lives more fruitful.

Why a Curriculum?

There is a need for the students of FIS and FJHS to encounter their world through active artistic involvement that will assure their rights to an extensive balanced learning opportunity. Art for some is only recreation, creative permissiveness and sometimes therapy. I believe that in art class there is a body of material to be learned and media to be mastered. Art must be taught in a systematic way for substantial learning to take place. Therefore the need for a well developed written K-12 curriculum with specified instructional goals and sequential tasks and outcomes are essential.
Since unexpected objectives may occur which are not planned for, a good art lesson is fluid enough to move with the needs and resources of a particular class. Every student will find something, a special niche or form of expression that they have success in. It is the teacher’s job to lead them to it, and develop attitudes. Some will hate the things they are asked to do because they know little about it but they should continue. By staying with that discipline they may find some aspect useful for knowledge to be built upon.
