    What is ESL?

ESL stands for English as a Second Language. Services are offered at the Fayetteville City School System to any child who does not speak English as his/her first language.  Each ELL (English Language Learner) will receive English language instruction as needed depending on his or her TELPA or ELDA test scores.

What is the Home Language Survey and what is it for?

The Home Language Survey is a survey filled out by every child that attends our schools.  This survey has basic information about the child and the languages spoken by the child and parents (also languages spoken in the home).

The HLS is for determining which children are eligible for ESL services/classes. If a student has any other language on any answer other than English, he is eligible for services.

What is the TELPA and why is my child being tested with it?

The TELPA is an English language placement test. If your child turns in a Home Language Survey with any other language other than English listed in any of the answers (even if only the parents speak another language other than English), your child has to be tested for ESL services. If he/she passes the placement test, he/she does not qualify for ESL services and will not receive them.

    What is the ELDA?

The ELDA is a test that only students receiving ESL services take every spring. It is similar to the TCAP as far as the time it takes to administer the test, getting results back, and letting the educator know where the student stands in his/her English language development.
