General Information: 

Currently, the system operates one elementary school, one intermediate school and one junior high school serving students in grades PK-9. Governing the school system is a six member Board of Education, members of which are elected at large by voters in Fayetteville.  The Board, in turn, appoints the Director of Schools. The School Board meets in open session on the first Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose room (upstairs) of the Fayetteville Municipal Building. The public is notified of any called meetings through the media.

Historical Information:

Destruction of some City records and School Board minutes leaves the exact establishment date of the system unknown. City records indicate that the city system originated from a private academy, which was established in the early 1800's on the old Robert E. Lee campus. Records indicate, however, that the system as we know it probably became operational in 1910.

Accreditation:

All schools of the City System are fully accredited by the State of Tennessee and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Inclement Weather:

On days it becomes necessary to close school because of adverse weather conditions, announcements will be made on the local radio stations as soon as possible. Remember to listen specifically for announcements concerning FAYETTEVILLE CITY SCHOOLS on WEKR and WYTM-FM.

Transportation:

Bus transportation is provided for students living within the Fayetteville city limits.
