Fixing the STAR Student Help problem.
Note: This only applies to Windows based computers.
If you are receiving and error message in STAR that says
“register failk” and STAR locks up, follow the
instructions below to fix it.
- Open
up Internet Explorer.
- click
on the Tools menu
- click
on options
- a new
window will appear, click on the tab that says “Advanced” on the right side
of the menu
- scroll down thru the list and look for “Microsoft
VM”. If you see Java(Sun) take the check mark off. Under the Microsoft VM, put a check in
the box beside Java console enabled(requires
restart). You should have 2 fields
marked under Microsoft VM and no checkmarks under
Java(Sun). Click OK and reboot your
computer. Try using the help menu
in STAR, and it “Should” work. If
you don’t see Microsoft VM listed as an option, continue on to step 6.

- If you
do not see Microsoft VM, click here to
download Microsoft VM. Choose
Run or Open if you are asked what to do.
Install this software and reboot your computer.
- Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
and choose the update to Microsoft VM (there are some security issues with
the older versions)
DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! If it ask
you to reboot, choose Yes.
- You
may now start back with Step 1 and stop with step 5. Now, hopefully, your Help menus will
work at this point.
These instructions may not solve all of your help menu
problems. I have researched this problem
to the best of my abilities and make no guarantees that this will work. This could also have the effect of disabling
some other features you may have used in Internet Explorer. If you have any questions, please email me lunab@fcsboe.org
