FAYETTEVILLE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL INFORMATION
Student Guidelines and Information

This guide has been prepared by the principal and staff with input from teachers, students and parents.  Your suggestions for additional information and improvements are requested.  It is impossible to detail each rule, regulation, and behavior expectation.  The following are some general guidelines for students of Fayetteville City Junior High.

Remember:  common sense and good judgment are the greatest factors in guiding behavior.

Areas of Emphasis
Academics

Productive class time will be stressed; students and staff will strive to make every minute of class time educationally productive.  Students will be held accountable for completion of all class home- work assignments.  High academic standards will be maintained.

Attendance / Promptness

Unexcused absence or lateness from school or class will not be tolerated.  Abuse in this area hurts the student and the school and will be promptly dealt with.  Everyone will be expected to be where they should be, when they should be.

21st Century Technology

Every academic classroom is equipped with STATE OF THE ART computer stations. As technology is integrated in the curriculum, computer programs will be used to reinforce objectives taught.

Library / Media

Improvements and additions in this area will offer extended opportunities for all students and staff.

Equal Educational Opportunities

All students shall have the same educational opportunities regardless of race, color, creed, religion, ethnic origin, sex or disabilities.

Emergency Procedure

Signal for Fire Drill is repeated on and off sound. Evacuate (leave) the building according to instructions.  Signal for Shelter Drill is a continuous sound.  Take protective according to instructions.

Student Arrival

Doors to all school buildings will be opened at 7:00 each morning.  Parents are strongly discouraged from leaving their child at the school before 7.00 A.M. since the school does not provide any supervision before this time.  Students are encouraged to leave the campus as soon as school is dismissed each day but must leave no later than 4:00 P.M., unless the student is under the supervision of a teacher.  The school will not assume any responsibility for supervision under any other circumstances.  Students who arrive before 7:50 will go to the Commons Area (cafeteria) or areas as assigned.  Students are not to enter any other part of the building without permission.  A bell will release students to class.  At 8:05 each morning the school will observe a minute of silence as provided by Tennessee law.

Teacher Titles

Teachers and staff must be referred to as Mr., Mrs., or Miss plus the surname; personnel working in the athletics may be referred to as Coach.

Food Service

Students' lunchroom accounts are now being serviced by computer.  We strongly encourage you to deposit money in your child’s lunchroom account on a weekly/monthly basis instead of a daily basis.  This will help to serve our students in a more timely fashion.
Lunch: Daily................................ $1.75
Breakfast: Daily ............................ $ .90

Report Cards

Two report cards are issued every six weeks.  One is to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned.  This does not mean that the parent approves or disapproves of the report, only that he/she has seen it.  If the report card is lost, this should be reported by a note from the parent to the office.  The cost will be $1 .00 for replacement cards.

Grading Policy

This school believes that the issuance of grades serves to promote continuous evaluation of student performance, to inform the student and parents of student progress, and to provide a basis for bringing about needed changes in student performance.  The basic grading system for subject area grades is expressed by a numerical value.  The numerical values are equivalent to the following letter grades:

A......................... 94-100
B......................... 86-93
C......................... 76-85
D......................... 70-75
F......................... Below 70 (Failure)

Grades given at the end of each six-week period will be determined from daily work, oral and written assignments, and tests.  The teacher will weigh the value of grades given for various assignments within the six- week period computing the grade.

An excused absence permits the student an opportunity to complete missed work.  It is the responsibility of the student to obtain the specific assignments from the classroom teacher.  The classroom teacher is responsible- for determining the assignment and setting the time frame for its completion.  Absences may be excused for the following reasons:
1. Illness
2. Death in the family
3. Religious holiday
4. School activities
5. Other circumstances cleared in advance with school officials

Check-Out Policy

Only parents or legal guardians may authorize a student to leave school during the day.  Any parent who wishes to check a student out during the school day must come to the school office to do so.  Teachers are not to release a student from a classroom until notified by the office.  The student must be signed out in the office.  If there is a question of legal custody, school officials reserve the right to require proof of custody before releasing a student.  If someone other than a parent checks a student out, he/she must present a note from the parent.  The note must contain the following information:

1. Date
2. Phone number where parents may be reached during the day
3. Reason for checkout
4. Time of checkout
5. Parent's signature

School officials will check the validity of any questionable note.  Any such note which cannot be verified will not be accepted, and permission to checkout will be denied.  Any student checking out for any reason must be signed out through the office.  Students returning to school the same day must sign back in through the office.

Excused and Unexcused Absences

Unauthorized absence from school is considered truancy and will be treated as such.  This includes absence from any class, study hall, or any activity during the school day for which the student is scheduled.  Disciplinary action shall be taken in such cases, beginning with notification of parents for first offense and a mandatory parental conference for the second offense.  The name of any student who has committed five unexcused absences in a given school year shall be submitted to the attendance teacher.  The attendance teacher will then pursue available means to persuade or compel the student's return to regular attendance including but not limited to an appearance in juvenile court.  An excused absence allows the student the right to have an opportunity to make up work missed. (Provided it is possible to make it up.)  All makeup work should be completed within the grading period it was missed unless other arrangements and special permission is granted by the instructor.  It is the responsibility of the student, not the instructor, to inquire about arrangements for makeup work.  The instructor will set the specifics of the makeup and the student must meet these arrangements.  A student who misses school on a specific day and returns the next day may be held responsible to meet the obligations of the class upon returning unless excused by the instructor.  Therefore, a student missing school should find out what the assignments are for the next day.  To receive an excused absence, the student must present a bonafide note signed by his/her parent or guardian stating:

1. Reason for absence
2. Telephone number and calling time and place for verification.

If there are extenuating circumstances, the instructors involved and the Principal may consider the case and make judgment.  The school principal will accept notes from parents for up to 10 days of absence.  Beyond 10 days will require a doctor's note.

Late to School

All students are expected to arrive at school before 8:05 A.M.  Any student arriving after 8:05 must sign in through the office.  A student late to school must have apparent note stating the reason.  Excessive and unexcused lateness will be treated the same as absence; corrective action will be taken.

Promptness to each class period is also important.  Students with excessive unexcused tardiness will be referred to the office for disciplinary action.

Change of Schedule

If you wish to change your schedule, state your reason to the Guidance Counselor who will discuss this with you and consult with the principal, teacher and parents for consideration.  When it is considered by school personnel to be in your best interest, transfers will be honored; however, requests based on personal / unjustified reasons on the part of students or parents will be denied.

Possessions

Students should be careful with things such as money and jewelry.  Items found should be promptly turned in to a teacher or the school office.  Stealing will not be tolerated.  The strongest of corrective measures will be used in such cases.  Knives, firearms, or any other dangerous or illegal material or substance are not allowed on school grounds.  The administration urges students to not bring personal items to school.  Jewelry, excessive amounts of money, CDs, book bags with items, etc. are not to be brought to FJHS.  The only exception to this rule is when students are spending the night away from home.  When this occurs, students are to check items in with the principal before 8:05 and get them at the end of the day.

Telephone Use

Students are restricted to the main office telephone and then only in case of an emergency.  Students will not be called to the telephone except in case of emergency.  Messages will not be delivered unless from a parent or concerning an emergency.

Textbooks

You are responsible for the care of your books and will be charged for damage or loss of books.  Lost and found books should be reported or turned in to the office.  You are responsible for the care of your books and will be charged for damage or loss of books.  Lost and found books should be reported or turned in to the office.

The Library

The library is designed to make supplementary resources available to all students.  Use of the library is encouraged within the rules and guidelines established by the librarian.

Guidance Services

Guidance and Counseling services are available to students through the Guidance office.  Career guidance, academic counseling, and personal counseling are some of the services available.  Students are welcome to come by the Guidance office during available times.  Parents may also make appointments to examine or discuss student's records or other concerns.

Student Council

Your student Council provides student activities, serves as a training experience for both student leaders and followers, acts as clearinghouse for students’ activities, seeks to increase interest and participation in school affairs, and helps to solve problems which may arise.  Members of the Council are elected by the different classes and are your representatives in student government.

Student Behavior
